Celebrating our heroes
To honour those members of the armed forces who gave their lives to defend Zimbabwe the nation holds an annual day of remembrance for them. Celebrations are held at the national heroes’ acre, where fallen heroes are buried. The day is celebrated with music, dance and performances alike a from various musical groups perform, including church choirs and war veterans’ choirs and school children recite poems about the liberation struggle. Similar ceremonies are held throughout the country at the respective heroes’ monuments. But we are not going to be talking about those heroes only today!
What is a hero?
Is it the characters we see on television doing heroic stunts? Or is it those who fought the liberation struggle? Perhaps it the people we spend our daily lives with.
Others have defined a hero as a person or a main fictional character who, in the face of danger, combats adversity through feats of ingenuity, courage, or strength. Others say it is a person who in the opinion of the other, has a special achievements, abilities or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal.
A hero to most of us is the person always there to aid us from the most difficult situations. The person who is there when we need them, the very person we list in our many documents as our next of kin because we trust that they will act when called in times of emergency.
Heroic strangers
As l was hurrying to the shops one day, my mind was miles away and l walked into the road without checking for oncoming traffic. A man who noticed, quickly pulled me out of the road as a speeding car swept past us. My heart was racing when l realised l almost got hit by a car. I thanked that man for saving my life. On that day he was my hero. The person who saved me from danger. The person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character. Like the Good Samaritan these heroic strangers are only appreciated by God, as they quickly move on when their work is done.
Family
Our brothers and sisters who make it fun to be in a family. Annoying as they may be sometimes, they will always put their heads together to get one of theirs out of a difficult situation. Yet we overlook celebrating them. A person who in the opinion of the other, has special achievements, abilities or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal. One writer said, ‘my mom is my hero and l would not be the woman l am today without her.’ Family makes up the tree of life.
Do we ever take time to appreciate them? The little things they do that make us able to go out there with our heads held up high. What would we be without them?
Friends
Our friends who came to us as strangers at first, but now more than family. The ones we run to when family is unreachable. The true friends with whom we never have to hide our true selves. They call a spade a spade even if the truth cuts deep. Not only are they true friends but true heroes of our lives.
Servants
The servants who wake up in the wee hours, and earlier than the whole household no matter how cold or dark it is. Letting the cold water freeze their hands and feet while they do our children’s laundry. Letting the dry dust enter their nostrils and mouths as they clean our yards while we remain safe in our lounges. The least trusted and yet most loyal and trustworthy. Do we not see their heroic efforts to keep us going?
There is no subscribed “heroes’ day” for them! These are the true heroes in our everyday lives! Let us remember that they deserve a present too. They deserve gold too. They deserve to be celebrated.
Gratitude and appreciation for our heroes
For that person who has been with you through it all. For the people who gather around to come up with ways to get you out of a difficult situation. What have you done for them to show your gratitude? A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strength to persevere and endure despite overwhelming obstacles.
We offer you a wide range of jewellery to choose from. Be it silver or gold, the choice is yours. Treat them as the gold that they are! The Heroes of our lives! Celebrate them while they can still celebrate with you and realise the hero in you as well.
I think that we all do heroic things, but a hero is not a noun, it is a verb. Hence, we can all be heroes in our different spheres of life by doing what we can and kindling great lights in the world, setting up blazing torches to guide those who follow behind us.
