It is quite interesting how I see customers walk in and look for that one piece that can have a sentimental value attached to it. I might seem like I’m just in the business of selling and pushing targets, but there’s always the hidden aspect of creating a fascinating customer experience, adding rhythm to the customer journey!
What I love the most about my clients is that they usually have an idea of what they want, the sentiments to the piece, that is. This calls for me to assist them in finding the perfect piece that matches the sentiments and the pocket of course LOL.
This one time a customer W walks in and makes a weird, or rather, exciting, surprise request. He chose 4 engagement rings, left a note and asked that we call his fiancé to just come to the store for a surprise gift from a secret admirer. We did and the note read:
“Bae…I’ve never been good with these sentimental things, but what I know is that our child wouldn’t want me to get you just a chocolate written P.S I love you! What he needs is a Daddy that loves Mommy exactly the way I love you! Here’s my commitment to you….”
Such heartfelt moments make my job super exciting! At that moment I’m like ‘girl, don’t catch feelings you are just the mediator’. Anyways, the long and the short of it, mommy sure said yes and picked anatomy of commitment. Customer W outdid himself.
As I get on to my daily work, most of these customers become friends and family. Bonds are built in the name of business. Speaking of which, there is customer X who comes and shops frequently. Every Christmas she comes in with a bubbly attitude and a small Christmas gift. Last year she brought me a nicely decorated Christmas cake, it just set on fire the whole festive mood.
Speaking of customer relations, there are some clients who kind of like put you in those de ja vu moments, customer Y is one of those. He has been an interesting shopper of affordable jewellery yet a great self-acclaimed brand ambassador.
Recently he relocated to a different country but keeps in contact. A few months back he called and requested for a silver chain price list and pictures. I assisted him to make his choice and he made his payment through a local friend. I had to go an extra mile to get a gift bag of the requested colour and inscribe the following: “for a pendant in need of a home”.
Apparently, the owner of the gift had lost her mom and had left a pendant for her. I called the lady to come and get the gift from a secret admirer. The rest is history.
I recall also serving customer Z over the phone. He works in another city. He wanted a surprise gift for his sister`s birthday. The sister is sold out to sterling silver. So, we connived with the brother and chose a sterling silver chain and pendant which I packaged and wrote: ‘all things pure”.
In this scenario the brother just had to pay and I called her to come and collect. I was not to disclose the mystery blesser as it was part of the surprise deal. She had to do the discovering herself.
I love my job, it’s a great opportunity to serve and give people hope. We all have our struggles but it’s these seemingly small things that make great days. It sure brightens my day to hear success stories of engagements and weddings and surprise giftings.
