Precious Jewels Lost
I remember back in the days when we used to do everything as a family. Eat together, play together and clean together. I also remember the one day when we were cleaning the house and my Gogo (grandmother) removed her wedding ring, obviously from Aurex Jewellery and covered it in some tissue so that the rings wouldn’t get damaged… (long story). After a while when everyone was resting from long hours of cleaning, the old lady suddenly remembered her rings. The worst part? They were nowhere to be found!
The Search Begins
The indoor search begun. It didn’t last long as the last grandson said, ‘I picked up some tissues that looked like litter, so I threw them in the bin’. Already the bin had been emptied at the community garbage pit, where garbage was burnt or collected on a weekly basis. I guess we now had an idea of where to search. The old lady headed to the community pit, so did Khulu (grandfather). For some time, I continued with my rest, but in no time I was feeling guilty that I decided to let my grannies go on their own to hunt for the rings. To my surprise I found my grand parents inside the pit where dog poop, pampers, and all such of smelly garbage is found.
Lost and Found
The unity in the family and the love I have for my grandparents left me no choice but to join them. It was almost an hour of searching, when I stepped out of the dumpsite, that my eyes met with what looked like my breakup letter from my ex-girlfriend. Well, that’s another story for another day. There was a dirty tattered tissue which seemed glued onto it. I took a closer glance and voila!, my grandmother’s 3 piece set ring peeping through the dirty tissue. I shouted with joy “I have found them, I have found them,” I had never seen such a smile on Gogo’s face before. Everyone was so excited as we rushed back home.
Putting the Sparkle back
My grand parents quickly hurried to bath and in no time they were in the car as they were rushing to Aurex Jewellery, Bulawayo shop for the rings to be cleaned. When they came back the ring looked new as ever, and the dinner turned into mini party as the two were renewing their vows. Did you know you can drop off your Aurex ring at any Aurex Jewellry shop for cleaning and polishing?
For a moment I was disgruntled, and I asked my granny ‘Gogo why did we go through such hustle for an insured ring?”. She paused for a moment, held Khulu’s hand, and with a smile on her wrinkled face she replied ‘Mzukulu (granddaughter), when you saw the two of us standing in the middle of all that garbage searching, it was as if a part of me had been lost. She continued as both raised their fingers with wedding rings, she said in short, these rings to us, mean ‘love, marriage and commitment.’
What Does Your Wedding Ring Mean to You?
So, to her that’s what a ring meant. To me from what l had seen on that day, a ring is reminder of the promises one made on their wedding day and of the promise that God has made to you both and even now I still believe so. Click here for some thoughts from the other side of the world about what wedding rings symbolize. I have that question for you today, what does your wedding ring mean to you?
